Things I like

Picked up a few things or downloaded a few things or tried something new over the last few weeks.

The Flip Ultra. Just a cool little device. Handy, small, easy to use. I just need more computer to speed up the edits.

Gorilla Pod Ok, seriously, this thing rocks. How can this much awesome only cost $20? Really? If you don’t have one, you should. I have used it with the The Flip as you have seen, but I have also tried it with my camera. The results are amazing!

Camino Yes, Camino. The browser. The one that, according to everyone, used to kinda suck. The same one I talked about last week. It’s as close to getting a version of Firefox updated for Leopard that you will find. Smokin’ fast, more like Firefox than Safari with some of the nice Safari features. Worth checking out, or revisiting if it has been a while. I’ve been using it for over a week and so far so good.

I still have Firefox, but I only open that when I need FTP or to snag/get properties of a background image (like Safari, you can’t do that in Camino).

Not drinking coffee I’m still undecided about this, but I think it’s having a positive effect. For the last 2 weeks I’ve dropped coffee from my daily routine and replaced it with tea. I can tell you I’m not feeling super-duper-so-tired-it-hurts in the middle of the day. I do know I had a triple latte last weekend and I crashed hard about an hour after I finished it. I’m still drinking coffee, but pretty much only on the weekends. Heck, I even bought a cooker for the office and a fresh box of Earl Grey.

New Wordpress goodies I’ve been playing with RSS capture again. This time for Motoringfile. It’s going to be cool, trust me. Check out db.com to see what it is. If you see photos from my flickr, come back and tell me to get on the ball!

My workout I’ve made a few changes, focusing more on my ‘core’ (god, did I just type that? I really really hate that term) and less on my arms and legs. To that end, I have been doing more exercises that use my own body weight for resistance (the helper bar dip/pull up machine) and doing more sit-ups. Oh yea, and I tripled my cardio.

My huge equipment purge At the office. So far, phase 1 has consisted of elimination of over 50 pieces of electronics equipment. Phase 2 was the re-organization/cleaning of my space. Phase 3 will include the final recycle purge and end with Phase 4 which will be getting rid of the last of the working equipment either via donation or very cheap sell off to employees. If anyone is in SoCal and might be interested in an IBM NetVista with a PIII 700 and 128MB or RAM running Win2K, let me know. I have a potential of 7 and they will be going cheap!

If I did everything I was supposed to this weekend, MV.tv should be almost ready to go live. I’m trying hard to shoot for Wednesday, but we’ll see if I can get the content together. Watch this space for more info.

Wait I’m confused. This post says Wednesday but the last post says a couple months for MV.tv. Which is it?

  2. db Says:

that’s what I get for preposting and not checking them.

Downloading Camino now to give it a shot..

Ok- here’s a question for the geeks out there: Why the #@$@# do my application icons KEEP resizing down to small? Even when I set the back to 64×64 (and set as default)- by the next time I’m on the computer (ie, next boot) they’re back to normal. It drives me friggin insane. And coverflow for apps is stupid. No really, it’s stupid. Anyone got suggestions? I refuse to search google, macrumors, or the apple support forums due to laziness and lack of caffeine. Also, I’m supposed to be working now.

  4. db Says:

Do you mean on the dock or in the Application folder? I know my dock resizes automagically and I hate it (but refuse to complain). I’d rather it stay one size and scroll or something.

And I thought you could turn coverflow off or on by folder. I think that’s a finder setting. I don’t use it at all (I think it’s stupid for anything except iTunes, and I don’t use it there either).

  5. Josh Says:

chans, it sounds like a problem with your .ds_store files. Those are little files in every folder you’ve ever viewed that saves what view settings that specific folder should use. But I don’t know why they’re not setting right or why your icons keep shrinking.

I wish I could use Coverflow for just one folder and not have it reset next time I go back to that folder.

  6. chans Says:

Josh- thanks for the advice..I did try (and failed) to delete these aforementioned .ds_store files but that caused a nice little crash….a reboot seemed to help. Stupid icons are back to 32 x 32. I know it’s petty- but that is the ONLY thing I can find wrong with Leopard thus far. Maybe I will be a troll on the forums…grr…

  7. Ian C. Says:

I know I’m not in SoCal … but how cheap for the IBM machines? And do they have two RS232 ports?

  8. db Says:

I’m sorry to say they don’t. They have 6 USB, most of them have 2 NICs and 1 modem. All have built in sound, CDROM and Floppy.

I would have to see what shipping would cost, but I think we are going to let them go for $150 or less.

  9. db Says:

There are 6 machines total. One or two of them is a Celeron processor, the others are PIIIs 700’s
