Number 29: Don’t make resolutions
Time to start thinking about the New Year gang. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but it is time. And, don’t worry, no ‘best of’ list on wtf, no sir. If you want a list, I’m sure I’ll have one or two posted on one of the other sites.
I’m here to tell you today to not make any New Year Resolutions.
Resolutions are for New Years Eve parties. You tell everyone you are going to exercise more, go on a diet, stop smoking, be more organized or whatever. You don’t actually do any of those things past the middle of January anyway, but it sounds good when you talk to you friends. So, why bother? I know I don’t, and haven’t for a very long time. Resolutions are a complete waste of time.
I gave up on them a while ago. About the same time I realized that I never stuck with them. That’s ok, I do something else instead that seems to work out pretty well.
Sure, I’ll tell you this, that or the other thing are my resolutions, my hands behind my back and fingers crossed. But in reality, I have already assembled a complete list in my head that I will probably never share with you. Personal goals if you like. Stop smoking might be on that list. As might being more organized. But do you think I’m going to share that with you? Oh no.
Mine are promises, to myself, to do things different. To affect change in my life. To make things better where possible. Oddly enough, there is more pressure because I really hate letting myself down or not hitting goals I set for myself. Bonus is that I don’t have to get any grief from anyone about working on something (or not hitting a goal) because nobody knows about it.
Instead, I get to make a list of things I actually accomplished in the previous year and look like a hero, keeping to myself the things I didn’t accomplish to carry over into the next year.
I only had 4 this year. 2 I hit, 2 I didn’t, but it wasn’t for my lack of trying.
- Get healthy. More on this tomorrow
- Stop smoking. This has been moved to the very top of my short list.
- Triple the number of listeners to the show. Oh yea.
- Get work closer to home. More on this in the coming months.
Am I upset that I still smoke? Every time I light up. About not having a job closer to home? Everyday I spend 4 hours in the MINI. So, they get added to the list for ‘08 for me to make another go. Hopefully this time they will stick!

All comments at wind(the)frog(dot)net are moderated. In the wind(the)frog(dot)net labs I have an elite team of ninja robots keeping things on the up and up.
Dont' sweat if your comment isn't showing up. It's currently being analyzed by the robots to ensure that you are, in fact, you and not one of those idiot spammers that spend their days and nights clogging the tubes.
If does seem to be taking longer than normal, contact db and he'll hook you up tootsweet! You know, 'cause that's the kind of guy he is (and he is also the boss of the ninja robots).
Finally, for those of you in the know, Markdown is available as it a very small set of HTML tags. If you are scratching your head, don't worry, it's just geek stuff. You can still comment!

My sole resolution is easy: Support more of the fine restaurants we have in this lovely town of mine. ‘Cuz I’m stuck going to the same restaurants over and over again.
Everything else is just personal goals, like you says.

I hear you on the 4th item, definite goal for me this year to spend more than just weekends with the wife. Hmm… I hope my mistress isn’t reading this!
