The Sunday Post XXI

dancingWeb stuff, wifi and cats!

So, w(t)f spent yesterday and some of this morning in a complete state of borkage. Problem was with the ftp account I was using. Once I figured it out, I was able to upload the necessary files (latest greatest wp) and everything is exactly as it should be. I will take this as a great time to remind all y’all running wordpress that backing up is a very good thing and a great use of your gmail account. You should, probably once a week, run the wp-backup and have it sent to an email account (or download to your desktop). It also should go without saying that anytime you make a change to your theme, install a new theme or plug-in, you should also make a backup of your wp-content dir (copy in place or download to your desktop). But that’s rookie stuff that you knew already, right?

The reason it did spend yesterday borked is because I had to make an emergency trip to CCRM to fix their wLan. It was completely down and everything I can instruct them to do over the phone was done. Without wifi, they can’t take or manage houseboat bookings. So it definitely qualifies as an emergency.

I had them change the cable for the main access point already, so started checking out everything else, including the old cable. Nothing. So, I programmed a replacement access point (using Buffalo equipment down there, more on those in a later post) and put it in place. Still nothing. Well, not nothing, but the range was only about 100 feet, when it should have been about 1/2 mile. So, just for the heck of it, I replaced the cable again with their last new one (2 in reserve for just such an occassion) and wouldn’t you know it, it worked! Last time they ordered backup cables one of them was probably damaged during shipping. So, 3 hours of work and 9 hours in my car later, they are good to go. Snapped some cool pictures on the way down there if you want to check them out.

And I’m going to wonder who of this particular group (see the sidebar) will be the last to get Leopard. I think it will be me since I’m going to wait at least another week, maybe 2. Anyone waiting longer than that? And, for those of you that already have it…(I already got some conformation from jSchwa, but I’m, as always, looking for more feedback)

  • The dock on the right or left…works ok?
  • Anyone test the audio/video quality with iChat?
  • On the Intel machines, can you tell it is faster?
  • coverflow/preview work ok? Or is it real dodgy?
  • Anything else you would like to add?

I have decided to go ahead and up-g iLife while I’m at it, so I’ll do both at the same time. Still eyeing one of those 20″ iMacs too and I’m working toward making one my Christmas present this year.

Happy Sunday!

Ok, I’m on Leopard — yes, I bought it the first day AND didn’t stand in line AND got my tee — so I totally rock!!

Ok, here’s my 24 hour, barely played with it report:

Dock: I’m a dock on bottom kinda girl so I have no idea about the right/left thing.

iChat: I’ve not tried the video thing yet — I’d have to do my hair first.

Faster?: Actually, I think it is a bit. It most certainly isn’t slower.

Coverflow: I think it works pretty well. I’m still sorting some of the details, but you can see the document pretty well.

Things to play with — the mosaic screen saver (it thrills me beyond belief).

Buy Leopard already — join the fanboy bandwagon…you know you want to.

I read that the i-Life was a backwards step for iMovie and/or iDVD in terms of functionality, otherwise I might be upgrading too. Although having spent the last 4 days making movies and using the mac for some of the transfer I’m a wee bit disappointed in how poorly the Mac wants to play with my pc transfers.

  3. db Says:

2 features I don’t care about. Right now, I’m not making movies so I don’t need to burn them. But the new features of iPhoto really intrigue me.

I think you can still download the old version of iMovie after the upgrade too.

I was going to comment on this post, but it turned into a several paragraph essay some how, so just check in a couple of minutes.

I think Time Machine kicks pretty serious ass. I already used SuperDuper! as a backup but this is far more advanced.

Cover flow is neat and runs smoothly- but, not sure how often I’m going to use it. I’m trying to figure out if I can only apply that view to a select few folders (like photos).

I’m not sure I would ever use Spaces. Might be helpful with those with limited screen real estate but I doubt anyone with a desktop would find it useful. Once you have about 10 windows open things already get hectic.

I’ve yet to see the “notes” feature work in terms of syncing with the iPh..I mean “my latest and rapidly spreading rash?! It’s revolutionary!”

as soon as my new external HDD arrives I’m giving Time Machine a whirl. Dock ont he left right? people put it there?

I’ve got a few thoughts on my blog (click my name). I definitely think it’s an improvement over Tiger. I too DID NOT stand in line, though I didn’t get a shirt either. I drove by the store on my way to dinner with my wife and the line was a good 150 or so deep around 5:55pm, guessing shirts went fast.

Wait in line? Really? I did that for Windoze 95, learned my lesson, never again.

  10. db Says:

@John - left side for us little screen users. I prefer to have the extra space at the bottom of the screen for apps, not the dock. And you waited in line for 95? Wow, that’s hardcore. I gotta know, what machine did that go on? Mine was a P75 with 8MB RAM and a 4gb hard drive. Hot stuff, brand new from Dell.

  11. John W Says:

    @db Ah gotcha. LOL

Jeez what was that? Musta been my scratch built P75- or P90 can’t recall. Probably had me a whopping 128mb RAM, and my 1024mb HDD :) Good times, good times.

  12. db Says:

128MB of RAM? What? Where you made of money? I remember I upgraded to 24mb and it cost me $80 - $100

  13. John W Says:

LOL. hardly it took every scrap of self restraint to save my meager Wal-Mart (perris) paycheck… the 10% discount didn’t hurt either… back in the day when Wal-Mart sold HDDs, RAM, etc.

  14. radiationman Says:

Dock on the left seems to work ok. I threw it up there for a bit the other day, put it back on the bottom though because while if functioned fine, I just didn’t like it there.

While not an issue for db, I did discover that iLife ‘08 WILL NOT RUN ON G4 Macs! Won’t even let you install… And it will be quite some time before there’s a new Mac in my future, that is unless my 18 month old Compaq suffers a tragic and untimely death 8)… KIDDING!!!!

Oh, and I didn’t wait in line for 95, however I did wait in line on Windows 98 day - not for the OS mind you, but for the $95 Targus laptop bag that Computer City had on sale for $25 as part of their Windows 98 celebration sale… I think I finally got rid of that bag last year…

  15. chris Says:

yeah, I’m not really sure why I stood in line..I mean, there were some serious mouth-breathers in that line. I wanted to smack the shit outta the guy in front of me- he wouldn’t shut up to save his life. He was trying to “sell” a mac to his friend that was just standing there with him..I truly felt sorry for him.

Also, I found out when I installed iLife 08 on my wife’s g4 ibook that it did install- all except imovie (apparently that requires an intel mac). Which G4 did you have? Again, I installed it on the 14″ 1.42ghz version.

  16. paul Says:

btw my local target had a WD 500Gb drive for $129.99 at the weekend, perfect for your TimeMachine needs! Well, perfect for mine anyway.
