From the “no shit this really happened” files…
Been dealing with a problem at the resort. Internet connectivity. Or rather, a lack of a good connection. While their circuit isn’t the fastest (data and voice are shared on 1 T-1), it was faster than it has been for the last month.
My first investigation determined the fault was with the phone company. It happened shortly after a total outage. Of course, the phone company came back and couldn’t find anything.
So I start. I check DNS. I do a complete virus/adware/spyware/nasty crap scan on every computer on the property. Nothing. Well, some spyware, but nothing to get in a snit over.
So I keep checking. Event viewer errors are researched. More DNS checking ensues. I just can’t find anything wrong.
So, I drive out there (4.5 hours each way) to actually get my hands on the equipment. I first check the XP machines down there for all the nasty crap that can kill bandwidth. Nothing.
Then I start back on the server. Still can’t find anything wrong.
So, I hook up my laptop. It’s slow also. I plug my laptop directly into the router, still slow. I made my laptop the router, plugged directly into the adtran box. Still slow.
I knew this wasn’t my problem!
So I called the phone company guys. Super helpful and got them squared away this morning.
The problem?
There was a bullet in the line.
Yes, that’s right, I said a bullet.
You just can’t make this shit up.
