Experiement updates.
If you post they will come
Record numbers here at w(t)f for the month of August according to the logs. Uniques were up about 200 to last month, over 700 to the first few months of the year. Want to know how I did it?
I posted.
Granted I have had the time over this past summer to get up a new post almost every day. This, plus some creative tagging I think is how I did it. Further checking of the logs show that most of you get here either by your own accord (possibly bookmarked), via your RSS reader or from a link of mine some where on the interwebs (viddler, flickr, twitter, dbmini, WRR or THCS). Sure, some of you came from links on the very few blogs where I’m linked, but not all of you.
There were quite a few of you that were new in August too. Hi.
Another I got going just recently is getting another family member to use an internet service. This time, I got my sis to start a wordpress.com blog. I know I know, crazy talk to be sure, but she wants to do one for her site, so I am making her practice. So far, so good. So, that makes mom with the flickr and sis with this blog. What have you done? You remember the New Years Challenge, right? The end of the year is gettin’ close and so far I think I’m winning. All y’all better get some giddyup goin’ if you expect to catch up!
It was bound to happen sooner or later.
The Family found my blog
A few weeks ago I sent my aunt a link to my first film transfer video. You know, she’s in it and I thought she would get a kick out seeing that, a bit of sneak peak of things to come if you will. Well, she started clicking other things appearantly. Then I got a phone call saying how this is sooo funny or that was funny or interesting. I’m trying to figure out what she was talking about, since nothing on Viddler is that funny. Then I got the lightbulb and the bell.
Oh shit, she found w(t)f.
As she found it, so did a couple of my cousins. I think Mom might have even stopped by.
Oh shit, Mom is here too?
Well, now that you are here, welcome to w(t)f. Everyone, meet Mom, Jeannie and Big L. Mom, Jeanie and Big L, meet everyone. Don’t worry, everyone here is pretty nice.
Otherwise, the video transfer project has moved into Phase 2: sort and organize. After transferring close to 3k feet of film, I am ready to move on. I’m really starting to realize how underpowered the MacBook is too. Even in VisualHub it took hours to convert the files from the camera into DV format ready for editing. I won’t tell you the one time I tried to import from the camera into iMovie it was going to take 90 minutes for 15 minutes worth of video however. Still, better than attempting it on either of my Grandfathers machines, since they are both Pentium 4’s with 512K of RAM. Sure, they would work, but I have a deadline of Christmas I’m trying to hit.
I had an odd week in which I did a lot of work but did not make a lot of money.
I’m now a consultant?
More than a few times in the last couple of weeks I have been asked questions or have had to direct someone in one of the following.
- Blogs and getting one started
- Social Networking
- Online promotion
I’ve never given it much thought, but I guess I do have a little skill in doing those things. Sure, this blog isn’t that popular, but the other one is and I know what it takes to keep the readers interested and coming back. So there is that.
I did build a podcast from scratch to having over 3k listeners. Not entirely on my own, but I was part of the team that made it happen.
But I’ve never been huge on Social Networking above and beyond Twitter, but I know how it all works and I’m starting to play more on the Facebook and other things.
So, I guess I could consult on these. Too bad I didn’t make any money with the knowledge these times, but there is a really good chance that will change in the very near future.
Most of you have already friend’d me up on twitter and facebook, but if you haven’t, use the links on the right. I always follow back unless you are a spammer, so get to it!
Wow, the big five-o! Makes me want to surf or book somebody.
Updates, Upgrades and Uniques
I’m starting to serious wonder about my resume writing skills. No kidding, I have sent over 40 copies out in the last 3 week without so much as a nibble. Working on a re-write this week, but if anyone has any tips or pointers, please feel free to leave a note below.
As soon as I hit Publish here, I’m going to the gym. This is worthy of posting since I haven’t been since the weekend before MTTS. I managed to catch something that week and was congested and 1/2 deaf (yes, again). It’s finally cleared up, so I’m going. 3 weeks is a long time, and it’s going to be tough getting back into it.
Secretly, I want an iPhone. Not so secretly I don’t want to be an AT&T customer.
I’m still upset about missing the New Media Expo. Cool stuff happened there from what I could tell from the tweets and video posts I saw. I’ll have to try again next year.
I am extremely pleased with the way the new sites have turned out. And the redo on WRR (if you haven’t noticed). Helps keep the self confidence up. All new sites should go live this week.
I have a feeling a new computer will be purchased in the next couple of weeks. It will be for either myself or my Grandfather. I hope it’s me. 15″ MBP or 20″ iMac would be keen. Not sure I want to edit video or help Grandpa relearn his computer with Vista. And, since I will be doing all of the editing…
I hate that Wordpress releases a dot update a month after a new version. I need to figure out how to script Transmit to handle that all at once. Also not happy that the photo feature of “Press This” still doesn’t work for me. Although, they said it’s fixed for IE7.
I have a baby shower and wedding happening in the same weekend. One Saturday, the other on Sunday. Oh, and they are 1,000 miles apart. Wedding wins if I can swing it, otherwise a trip to Vegas will be in order.
Which would be good, since I need to get to the resort for maintenance and checking of things. Big upgrade might be coming their way after the first of the year.
Church bus full of screaming kids just drove by. That was weird.
Just so you know, you can count yourself among the 1,500 or so w(t)f readers. Sure, not huge numbers, but I’m still fairly pleased. Thanks for stopping by. Don’t forget, you can subscribe to get the posts easier. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know if there is something worth click back about.
After I take the new sites live, I will be able to get started on The Hollywood Car Show site. Go ahead and click it if you want, should be a placeholder page there. I think by the end of the week it should be up and running.
Ok, that’s it. Time to start my day. Have a great Sunday everyone!
My boycott of the intarwebs is almost over.
Stuff I’ve been working on
I survived MTTS 2008. Barely, but I survivied none the less. Good times were had, even if it took me until Wednesday to fully recuperate.
And that put me behind.
Was late doing THCS. Worse was that it turned out like crap, so we couldn’t even use it. That added more behind-ness that I didn’t need.
2 fairly large projects on the go otherwise. 1 is done and should go live tonight. The other is close and might be ready to go live tonight, but probably tomorrow. 1 is Wordpress, 1 was Wordpress, but it was overkill for the site, so I redid it using php includes instead. Details on both of these will follow later in the week.
Then, I got a call on Thursday from a guy I helped back in June (he is the only one that responded to my Craigslist ad). Turns out, his company was having problems with their online store. Mainly, it was never completed and they needed it to work on Friday. I told him what he needed to do and left it at that.
Well, he did it and contacted me on Friday. 1 emergency storefront opening coming right up! Took me a bit to figure out the system, but I was able to get them up and running (even taking payment) the same day. Yes, I am that good.
So, I’ve been pretty busy this week. Hence the boycott. I really needed to knuckle down and get these done.
Everything should be slowly getting back to a psuedo-state of normalness in the next few days. Need to get started on my next project this week as well, watch for details on that much later in the week.
