You are no longer allowed

I’m trying to get some work done. The last bit of a project that is turning out to be larger than I thought (again) and I’m doing for about 100% less than I should be (again). It’s cool, but I’m having to stop and tell you all something right now.

I am done with the iPhone.

Did you see the period? Did you see the word done? This is to serve as your official notice that I will not listen to anything anyone says about the iPhone. I will no longer read posts that contain the word iPhone in them. I will no longer listen to podcasts that spend too much time on the iPhone. I’m going to stop following people on twitter that talk about the iPhone too much. After this post, I will no longer use the term iPhone on my blog or any site I work on unless I am paid to do so.

If all I had to listen to or read about was how awesome the phone is, then I probably wouldn’t be too upset. But that’s not all.

It’s the people that complain about it. That jailbreak it. That, for all intensive purposes, hate it. Yet they still carry the damned thing even though they get bad signal or have to jailbreak it to work the way they need it to, or have more problems than should be allowed by law. I don’t care.

I’m done. You can comment here about iPhones one last time. Go ahead, get it out of your system. After that, I’m done.

I’m probably going to switch back to Windows too, but that’s for another post.

Why not just fix it?

Boy we are right in the thick of it, aren’t we? Surrounded by so many people that would rather spend their time and energy blaming someone for problems instead of hiking up their skirts and doing something about it.

I understand there are those among us that feel strongly about certain things. Quite strongly in fact. And, when their ‘thing’ isn’t the way they like it watch out! They hit the ‘piss and vinegar’ fill line in short order and start going crazy. On blogs. On YouTube. Everywhere they can get someone to even pretend they are listening. Even, as I saw today, in church.

Folks, if you are so foaming at the mouth riled up against something, then why not focus on doing something about it? Why not focus that energy on affecting change? You recall last week when I was having problems with negativity surrounding me, especially in the MINI Community. Well, I said something to about 3K people about it and this week I’m seeing the change. I did something about it.

It’s not my place to tell a preacher that he shouldn’t be talking about politics on the pulpit. But, and this is only my opinion, it’s not his place to bring politics to his pulpit. If you think the system is that broken, if you think both of the candidates are that bad and are going to do that much damage to this fine country of ours, then why are still standing behind the pulpit? Why do you get out there are show the rest of us why you are so much better than the rest of them.

Then there is the Democrats blaming the Republicans blaming the Democrats blaming the Republicans about the current financial nightmare that is happening on Wall Street. Why doesn’t someone just just right in the middle of all of it, stand on the table and tell them to quit bickering and FIX THEM PROBLEM!

So much wasted energy. And I’ve wasted enough of my own on this topic already. Let us know what you think below.

The Sunday Post 54

I was subjected to so much anger this week. Not just online, but pretty much everywhere. I hope this helps.

Rant on Mother F*&$%rs!

Anger anger anger. Every where I turned this week there it was, staring me in the face. And I don’t do anger well.

I keep forgetting that I need to be on the road from my grandparents house at 5:30. One drink in, Grand dad is still ok. 1/2 way through his second drink he turns into even more of a pain in the ass than normal and damn if that Jack Daniels doesn’t turn him into a huge prick.

That is #1.

I keep forgetting that I need to not read the internets. Internet people are idiots.

That is #2.

Re: the internet people. I will say right now that it’s ok if you want to go to YouTube or some message boards and be total dickwad there. It’s like they are designed for that. And, as I do not visit YouTube anymore, let alone any message boards, the chances of our paths crossing are minimal.

Until you decide to step into my internets.

You see, on my sites, I’m king shit. I’m the guy in charge. And, on the sites I don’t own, I’m king shit there too. Sure, I don’t own them, but I’m there to uphold a certain level of whatever.

You see, I don’t do anger. We covered this already above. And when I have to read it on one of my sites, I tend to get upset. I mean really upset. And, when I get upset, I get angry. Trust me when I say you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

It’s at that point I do what I think is best for:

  1. Me
  2. The site

Yes, in that order.

Before you start crawling all of my sites looking for an email address or contact form so you can keep the conversation going ‘offline’, just stop. And I will tell you why.

  1. I’m not in your address book already? This mean I don’t know you. It also means your email will get deleted as soon as it lands in my inbox.
  2. You are an idiot? I’m sorry, I can’t help you there. You should try pulling your head out of your ass. Or go outside for some air.
  3. You are mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore? Um. Tough shit. I don’t care.
  4. You think you are right? Um. You missed the “I’m king shit” part above, didn’t you?

These are things you need to keep in mind before you decide to let your keyboard be your tough guy in my internets.

But, really, if you feel strong enough about something that you are willing to make yourself look like an ass to over 20,000 readers, then you should be prepared to face deletion, moderation or to have your ‘outlet’ taken away.

If you really feel that strongly, might I recommend you get your own corner of the internet so you can put your poor grammar, poor spelling and anger to pixels someplace else.

It will make it easier for me to ignore you.

Thank you for your time.

Don’t let this happen to you

Had a little bit of web site consulting today. No, I’m not going to share the site with you, because that isn’t my point today.

I’m going through the site with the guy, telling him just how bad it really is. I’m pretty sure it was made with a hacked copy of Flash Studio and Dream Weaver 4. Navigation was non-existant. Unneccessary flash. Keywords in images, not in the text. Tables for layout. You get the idea.

The further in I go in telling this guy how bad his site is, the more and more angry is starts getting. Not at me because he is agreeing with every point I make (about 20). He is getting mad with his web guy for basically lying to him while he charged him US$10,000 to make the site.

10 Grand? Really? I’ve seen better websites for high schools done by the AV Club.

It’s obvious this guy got taken for a fairly long ride. No kiss, no dinner, no nothing. All he is left with is a crappy website that he will talk to his web guy about using the list I sent him as a guide. His guy will more than likely want a lot more money to do the work, at which time I’m sure he will call me back and I’ll make him a smokin’ deal. But this isn’t my point today either.

I’m not sure I really have a point here today. I am fairly pissed that there are still people out there with an old copy of dreamweaver churing out crappy websites and charging people way to much to do it. And, I’m not pissed that they are taking business from me, I pissed that they are taking advantage of people that don’t anything more than the fact that they need a website.

If you are one that needs a website, make sure you check with someone that actually knows better first. Everyone has a friend that is more web savvy than you are. Someone that reads blogs, digg or SlashDot. Someone that has visited flickr, twitter or facebook. Someone that can look at the portfolio of the firm you are looking to hire and tell you if what they produce is crap or not. Use these people.

Trust me on this one. You’ll be glad you did.

Besides, I’m starting to get tired of having to go back after others to fix busted/ugly/poor websites. I mean, I need the money and all that, but I’d rather get a start-from-scratch gig, ya know?

Something new to bitch about

After this on Tuesday.

Twitter / radiationman: @dbwilldo enough with the i...

It made me think. Do I really bitch about IE that much? The more I thought about the more I realized that, yes, I do. IE6 has turned into the iPhone ‘07 bitch (you remember those, right?).

So, I can’t complain about IE6 anymore. Can’t really complain about the iPhone either (but I’m seriously thinking about paring down my twitter for some of the more serious offenders).

I could call to task one of the over 100 business within a 30 mile radius of me that didn’t even bother to send me some kind of reply when I sent in my resume. No, that’s too lame.

Maybe complain about money, or my complete and total lack thereof? Again, lame.

I really can’t think of anything else good to complain about.

So, it looks like I’m going to stick with the eradication of Internet Explorer 6 as my cause for the time being. I would like to refer to Mr. Hotdogsladies for a moment if you will allow.

Twitter / Merlin Mann: See, I understand:

And, in reference to the point made by Mr. Raditionman above, no, they haven’t. A quick check of the logs on 4 of my sites show that IE6 comprises over 30% of my total viewers, averaging 8.4% per site so far this month. That is a full third of people that read the words I write are doing so with Internet Explorer 6.

I would guess a fair number of those are stuck with it because their IT shops are stuck in a “slow motion stoke”, but it is people like me that will get them to trust, or at the very least, begin to test, Internet Explorer 7 or even (gasp!) Firefox.

I have mentioned that I am no longer supporting IE6. If I lose business because of it, so be it.

But, I will slow down on my bashing.
