Podcasts I listen to

I know I have covered this someplace before, but I don’t think I’ve done it here. So, lets get to it!

From the TWiT network, I’m currently listening to TWiT, Daily Giz Wiz, Mac Break Weekly, Windows Weekly, Security Now and Net@Nite. If you listened to N@N before but got tired of Ambers crappy call quality, it’s been fixed and the show has actually gotten better.

From Cnet I listen to Buzz Out Loud (the best tech news show IMO), CarTech (The second best automotive podcast), gadgettes (mostly because it can be pretty funny) and I watch the buzz report.

Ask A Ninja, Tiki Bar TV and MotorKultTV round out the video podcasts I watch. Usually, they are pretty good.

A few new ones I’ve been checking out are The Roadhouse Podcast which plays some great blues and the Scooter Cast which is about, scooters. Both are pretty good and I thoroughly enjoy them when I have the time.

Add to the list Podcast 411, which is a podcast about podcasters and usually pretty interesting, plus The Mobile Movie Minute and The Business Cast done by Robert Gold. I really enjoy these as well.

Finally, the very newest in my subscription list is You Look Nice Today. No kidding, it’s the funniest thing on the internet right now. Like Josh, I would listen to these guys every day if they were to go daily. And it’s funny. Like, laugh out loud and make people look at you funny. You should check this out. Be warned, it does carry the explicit tag and they aren’t afraid to use it.

Oh yea, I also listen to WhiteRoofRadio and watch their videos at WhiteRoof.tv. Those guys put on the best Automotive podcast money can buy, and they do it for free! You should totally check them out ;)

I’m always looking for something new to listen too, so if you have a suggestion, feel free to leave it in the comments!

My Setup

This was recently asked of me, and I thought for a minute to realize that I haven’t, really, described my Podcast setup fully. You can get an idea of what I’m using on the about page at WRR, but I’ll go into a little more detail here.

Hardware

I actually have quite a bit of gear that gets used in one way, shape or form, in the creation of a show. Here is the breakdown.

  • Audio Technica mic
  • Shure mic
  • Behringer UB805 mixer
  • M-Audio Mobile-Pre USB Audio Device
  • Edirol R-09 portable Digital Recorder
  • Audio Technica shotgun mic for Edirol that I stole from Todd

The mixer that I used to have was the Alesis multi-mix 8 USB. As it turns out, the US version of this device will not work with EU power (even through a transformer), so I cooked it last summer. I hope to replace it soon as it’s a very nice mixer.

Software

I’ve used and/or tried many apps to record or mix and think I have finally come up with a solid setup that fits my workflow.

  • Skype
  • Apple Garage Band
  • Audio HiJack Pro
  • Audacity

I’ve tried Ubercaster, Castblaster and a few others, but they were too complicated/not stable enough to use on a regular basis for the WRR show. For a 1 person show, or a show where all participants are in the same room they might work better.

PodCamp SoCal

This weekend is the Portable Media Expo at the Ontario convention center. The who’s who of podcasting usually shows up for a giant weekend long part, or so I have heard.

This year, to kind of kick off the event, there was a PodCamp. They have these throughout the country and usually last a weekend or so. This one being the day before the event, it only lasted a day. And, in my opinion, could have been better, at least for me.

I was thinking it would be more of a group type thing. People gathered together talking about different things that related to creating, displaying or promoting content. Not so much. Instead, it was an endless line of speakers from 10:30 until 5:00 with only 1 30 minute break in between.

I’m sure that most people people might have gotten something out of it and I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t one of them. Oh well, it was worth the experience and I did get to meet a few people and help a few more with some Wordpress tips.

This was also a first for me. Not only did have the best tan out of everyone there, but I was also one of the few that didn’t have a ponytail! Yea, kinda like being a Linux UG meetup or something. It was very foreign to me and I was slightly uncomfortable.

Looking like I will be going back on Sunday for sure to catch the Ask A Ninja guys doing the keynote in the morning, then checking out the convention floor. I might go out Saturday too, just depends on how I’m feeling.

Oh yea, I did record a little something on the drive out. I should be able to get that posted tomorrow sometime.
