Awwww yeah!

Just can’t get enough of this.

Manheim Steamroller? Check. Enough lights to make Clark Griswold jealous? Check. Epileptics avert ye eyes.

Bad Timing

This morning I received a phone call from my Mom. My Uncle, her brother-in-law, passed away last night while he slept. I don’t have any other details right now. I do know that he was recently diagnosed with severe heart problems and his test results were due today from the doctor. We weren’t really close, but he was a great guy and he will be missed.

I’ve known other people that have lost family members during this time of year and it’s always so hard. This is the time of year that is supposed to be all about family, friends and loved ones and it’s always especially difficult when there is a loss. I haven’t had a chance to speak with my Aunt or Cousins, but Mom is quite upset about it which is a pretty good indication of how things are. It was so sudden. Nobody was expecting this.

So I will probably be a bit sparse this week helping out where ever I can.

The Sunday Post XXV7

The new Cat

This is Kitten

For those of you that missed it in the Flickr (handy link on the far right), this is Kitten. Sure, not the most inventive name, but it seems to be sticking.

About a month ago this little critter started coming around. She was cute and all that, you know, ’cause she is a kitten. But she would then go as quick as she came. Next thing you know, she stopped leaving. I waited for about a week and asked around, but she didn’t belong to anyone, so I was going to take her to the shelter.

But then I got busy. And she got cuter. So we decided to let her stay.

She is no longer living the tragic life of a transient kitty. Now, living it up by lounging on the chairs, chasing the other cat and getting slapped silly by her, and playing with the assorted toys she now has. Sometimes she disappears, and it’s then I’m sure she is planning our destruction like all cats do.

Again, for those of you that missed it in the flickr, here are the cats, just chillin’.

The cats

That’s Becky the no-claw-wonder-cat on the bottom, and Kitten up above.

Don’t get to used to these kinds of post. It’s not an el-jay for craps sake. I just thought y’all might be intested.

I was trying something new

CJ sent me a link via del.icio.us for something that looked promising. Called Disqus, it’s supposed to be a forum-like comment replacement system. As it turns out, it doesn’t work with this theme and their forums are seriously lacking any information.

I might, however, give it a go for the tumblr like others have.

Thanks for the link CJ!

OpenDNS

Severe geek stuff warning. If that scares you, read it anyway. Just skip the first 2 paragraphs

There are only 2 things, technologically, that drive me bonkers. The first is credit card processing on any POS system. Getting that to work once it leaves the bench can sometimes be quite a harrowing experience. I’ve wasted many hours chasing down problems then having to assist a site’s manager with the end of day books to make everything balance.

The other is DNS. I can honestly say that I do not like dealing with DNS issues. Nope. Not even a little bit. But I do and I can because it’s my job. It’s just that it is more than slightly confusing to me and I usually end up confusing my reverse look-up zone with my forward look-up zone. That, or I don’t remember if I was supposed to use an A-record entry or a CNAME entry. Ugh.

Anyway, this is all stuff that most of you never, EVER, have to deal with. You open the network properties on your computer or router and configure the DNS server there, usually using the one provided by your ISP.

I can tell you that the DNS server your ISP has sucks. But I am going to recommend one to you that does not suck.

OpenDNS.

From their site:

OpenDNS protects more than a million people a day across hundreds of thousands of schools, businesses and homes as they navigate the Internet. We block phishing sites and give you the power to block adult sites, proxies and individual domains.

And, all of that stuff works. And it works great! The servers make the internet faster and safer at the same time! You can even set up a free account and make changes to how it reacts to typos (.cmo, .nte for example), what sites you want to block access too (adult, phishing and others) plus it gives you a record of anytime someone tries to access those. It’s truly a great service and the very best part of this?

It’s free.

Free like beer my friends. It will cost you nothing to use OpenDNS. You don’t even need an account to use OpenDNS, only if you want the extra features. Faster safer internet. Would be perfect if you are planning on participating in the new years challenge. Only takes a minute to do. Leave a comment below if you are interested in setting this up and need a little assistance.
