Not so much a fix as a do.
Trying to help about rachet in his quest for a links page. According to this page in the codex, it actually quite simple to make it happen.
All you have to do is create a file (called page2.php for example) with the layout and WP bits you want. Then, at the top of the page you include something like:
< ?php
/*
Template Name: Snarfer
*/
?>
Replacing Snarfer with whatever you want to call this page template. Upload into your theme directory.
Then, in the admin to to write a new page. Give it a title and content. Before you click publish, look a little lower for a drop down box that says Page Template and select your template from the drop down list. Once that is done, click publish and voila!
At least it worked for me on my tester. It is still a work in progress.
I can totally understand the reasoning behind spamming blog comments, trackbacks and referer logs. Really. Everyone is just trying to make a buck. The dollar can be very very powerful.
Now, here is the part that I don’t understand.
Let’s say Mr. Spammer sets up a domain name called get-drugz-now.com. Ok.
Now, Mr. Spammer has a domain name, he sets up a bunch of subdomains like cialis. or viagra. or bigger-penis-online.
Once complete, Mr. Spammer goes to work. His program spewing ads like crazy, being sneaking about it too, switching open, unsecured proxies to get a different IP address everytime, rotating user agent strings that appear to be valid.
1M sites get spewed. Bandwidth spikes, sites become unavailable. Comment and trackback files get hammered.
rookie webmaster sees the link in their logs and clicks the link out of curiosity (or maybe actually wanting a bigger-penis-online).
Guess what? Yea, the site is not available. Even if you take away the subdomain, the main domain is not available either.
So Mr. Spammer is loosing out on any traffic he/she will get that way. Now, what about search engine juice? Sure, they will get it, but if the links don’t go anywhere, what is the point?
Anyone?
My point being, why bother to spam if what you are selling can not be presented to your customer? I would guess these domains are shut down within minutes of being setup.
If I were Mr. Spammer, I would look for a better way to get business or make money. Like a real job or something. But, that’s just me…
More from the ‘things I hate…’ files
Yes, you read that correctly. The number is 74. But db, you ask, what does it mean?
Today, from 08:17AM to 08:24AM, that is the number of times trackback spam attempts happened at dbmini. I say spam attempts, but that is really, again, more like an attack. This doesn’t count the rest of the garbage I found, which is more than 100 other attempts at spam in the same period. Yes, that’s right, in 7 minutes this morning dbmini.us was hit over 200 times in an attempt to spam! This is no longer spamming!
I have been vigiliant tho with my .htaccess rules. And, it’s paying off. Here is a snap shot of my server errors so far for the month of March:

Still a ton of bandwidth being used up, but at least thier crap and garbage isn’t getting through. I would say I’m stopping 99% of them. I’d rather it be 100%, but that would be asking too much.
If you would like to check out my .htaccess file, comment below and I’ll make it available.
I know I’m not the only one with this problem. These f’ing spammers don’t give a crap obviously. What if I needed accurate logs because I had advertisers (something I’ve seriously considered doing over there)? What if I had a limited bandwidth account? I mean, it is, but not so bad where I notice. And finally, what if I really wanted to see the crap they are peddling? 100% OF THOSE MOTHER F’ING SITES ARE TAKEN AND THE URL’S ARE BAD! I WOULD BET THAT THE SITES COME DOWN BEFORE THE FIRST F’ING PIECE OF CRAP EVEN HITS A SINGLE SITE!
I mean, shit. These people are really pissing me off. Just stop already.
where I oversleep because the time on my alarm clock must be off by 12 hours. Where I forget to put water in the coffee maker so I can wake up to a steaming cup of nothing. Where the first news item I hear about (again) is Terri Schaivo. Where at least I didn’t get a flat tire, but did have to follow a CHP over the mountain, adding 20 minutes to the journey. Where I honestly hope nobody does anything overly stupid to intentionally piss me off.
I don’t hate Monday’s usually, but for this one I’m willing to make an exception.
I found this a few weeks ago in the mini blog, but ran across it again today.
It’s a whole page of fake auto ads. But only one was truly funny!
I can honestly say, that at least in OC, this is 100% true!
